Most important streets of Chisinau

The area of Chisinau is relatively compact; its downtown part is connected to all other administrative districts of the city - Centru, Riscani, Botanica, Ciocana, TV-Center and Buiucani - via good road network. If you arrive to Chisinau by air, the city will welcome you through its white entrance gates in Dacia Boulevard in the south-eastern part of Botanica district.

If you arrive by rail, you can reach the central part of the city from the Railway Station Square with the Cultural Center of Railway Workers via Negruzzi Boulevard and Independence Square, which is formed by two hotels - National and Chishinau - and the main building of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences. There is a monument in the middle of that square commemorating the liberation of Moldova from the Nazis in 1944.

The section of Cuflea street reconstructed to a wide thoroughfare was festively commissioned on October 3, 1999, the day of Chisinau’s Patron Saint, when Chisinau was celebrating its 563rd anniversary. The Independence Square is the starting point of Chisinau’s main street – Stefan cel Mare Boulevard 3.8km long. Its name and appearance underwent significant changes during its long history.

Chisinau’s main square – Piata Marii Adunarii Nationale (Square of the Great National Assembly) divides the main street into two halves after its intersection with Pushkin street. The appearance of this square has similarly undergone significant changes as result of reconstruction. There is a park on the one side of the main square with Chisinau’s landmark – the architectural ensemble formed of the main cathedral, bell tower and Triumphal Arch commemorating the victory over Turks in the Russian-Turkish war of 1806-12.

Chisinau has one more ‘face’ which we love and value. The old town is the heart of any modern European city, no matter how large it is. Chisinau’s narrow old streets to be found quite close to the modern wide thoroughfares are quite peaceful and charming, such as: Bamulescu Bodoni street, Vasile Alexandri street, Mihai Eminescu street, etc. Chisinau is unimaginable without them. Quite often, you will discover such streets just turning off the main street and finding yourself in the quiet lacy shadows of age-old trees which have seen so much of the city’s history. You lose track of time in such moments because some of the places you will discover seem untouched by the nuclear 21st century.

It is great that this city is actually looking younger, although becoming formally older with every year. The Chisinau of old is history. Modern residential districts have replaced vast fields. Chisinau today is modern thoroughfares cutting through the city with their concrete and glass scissors; green parks and alleys; high-rise apartment houses with thousands of windows reflecting the smiling sun.
