Moldavian Economy

Nominal gross domestic product in 2007 amounted to 53.354 billion lei ($ 4.8 billion) at current market prices. In comparable prices gross domestic product grew by 3.0% compared with the previous year.

Industrial enterprises of all types of ownership have manufactured products amounting to 26.187 billion lei in current prices. Index of industrial production in comparison with the 2006 year amounted to 97, 3% (in comparable prices). The situation in the industrial sector of the economy  is primarily  defined by manufacturing , which share in 2007 accounted for 89,1% of the total output of enterprises with main industrial activity. Volume of production, released by these enterprises decreased by 3,3% compared with 2006, which resulted in the decline of total production by 3.0%.

Agricultural production in all categories of farms in 2007 was estimated at current prices at 12550 million lei ($ 1.14 billion) or 76.9% (in comparable prices) relative to the corresponding period of the last year. Reduced agricultural output was due to the decline in crop production by 33,4% and animal products by 1,8%.


Investment in fixed capital from all sources of financing for the development of the national economy for the reporting period was utilized in the amount of 14936 million lei ($ 1.36 billion), of which 8,484,000,000 lei ($ 771 million) accounted for construction works or, respectively, with  19 , 9% and 20,5% more than in 2006. Commissioning of residential buildings decreased by 9.9%.

Turnover of rail, road, river and air transport in 2007 decreased by 6,6% compared with 2006, while the volume of cargo over the same period increased by 9,2%.


Passenger turnover of public transport in 2007 increased by 9,8% compared with 2006, while the number of passengers remained at the level of 2006.


Retail trade turnover in 2007 amounted to 28304 million lei, that (in comparable prices) represents 8,0% more than in 2006.


Paid services rendered to the population in 2007 amounted to 11853 million lei, or by 3,9% more (in comparable prices) than in 2006.


Exports of commodities in 2007 totaled $ 1,341.8 million, which exceeds the 2006 level by 27,6%. Imports of goods totaled $ 3,689.9 million, which is 37,0% more than in 2006. The trade balance had a deficit of $ 2,348.1 million or $ 706.5 million (at 43.0%) more than in 2006.


Average monthly wage per employee in the economy in 2007 amounted to 2063 lei ($ 190) or 21,5% more than  the previous year. In the public sector average monthly wage amounted to 1625 lei ($ 150), in the real sector of the economy - 2292 lei ($ 210).

The number of officially registered unemployed, according to the National Employment Agency, on 1 January 2008 amounted to 18,9 thousand people. The number of unemployed, as defined by the International Labour Office, in the III quarter of 2007 amounted to 70,1 thousands people.


In December 2007 compared with November 2007, the level of inflation was 0.9% and compared with December 2006 - 13,1% (in December 2006 compared with November 2006 the inflation rate was 1.2%, and compared to December 2005 - 14,1%).
